Before you begin, pray to God for wisdom to understand his Word. Pray that he uses this time to grow you.
Monday: “the Word of the LORD” d’var adonai
“The Word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai.”
It doesn’t say “An urging from the LORD to give a kind of message.” It doesn’t say, “Haggai had a hunch that this is what God wanted.” It doesn’t say, “God laid it on Haggai’s heart to do this.”
No. It says, “The Word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai.” God had a message, and he delivered it word-for-word to Haggai, and Haggai delivered that same word-for-word message to the people he was meant to deliver it to.
We have those exact words in our Bibles. The Bible doesn’t contain a general idea of what God sent. It’s called the Word of God precisely because these are the words that God gave.
We have this terrible habit as humans of trying to make God’s Word “fuzzy.” “Well, that’s not what it really says. Or it doesn’t say that to me. Or God would say that I’m ok here because obviously this situation is different.”
The thing is… God says what he means, and he knows how to say what he means, and he gives us those exact words. He uses human words. He tells us the exact words so we can know exactly what he’s thinking. He tells us what he’s thinking!
It also tells us that when you get an urge… guess what? That’s just an urge. That’s not God “putting something on your heart.” It may be very well and God-pleasing to do that thing – and if so, go for it! But God’s given us his Word already. You don’t need to go looking for it in your heart (because it’s not there!) and you don’t have to go looking for it in nature (because it’s not there)! Instead, here is God’s Word. Here is what God wants you to know. Here is where God tells you that you are his child. Here is where God strengthens your faith. Here is where God tells you his will. Don’t look anywhere else.
Here is the Word of the LORD. Here is God’s Word. Just dig into your Bible!
How certain is this Word of God? Read 2 Peter 1:12-21.
When are you guilty of ignoring that God speaks to you? Confess those times you wish that God’s Word were less clear, or the times you’ve purposely ignored it!
Do you feel God calling you to do something for him? God works through his Word, not through random urging. Instead of saying, “God is calling me to…” look into God’s Word to see if this thing is God-pleasing (ie, not a sin and still a good use of your particular talents). If it is still God-pleasing, feel free to pursue it – but be clear that this is your choice as you pursue ways to give glory to God!
